| Brief History of the... | |||||||
| The Hurling Club is a very important institution which attends to the social and sports life of the Irish community in Argentina. The name of HURLING comes from the so called Irish game which the immigrants started to practice in the 1887 and 1888 years in the province of Buenos Aires. In August 5th, 1900 the first hurling team is formed under the name "BUENOS AIRES HURLING CLUB". | |||||||
| After an inactive period due to the First World War, in 1922, an assembly of delegates from different teams, organizes the "ARGENTINE HURLING FEDERATION". In 1924, the Federation inaugurates its premises and fields in Villa Devoto, a Buenos Aires suburb. During the 1930s, the practice of hurling was very intense and it was really the soul of the Club. | |||||||
| But during the Second World War importing hurleys (hurling sticks) and sliotars (hurling balls) from Ireland became almost impossible. Mainly due to that, hurling gradually came to a stop. Nevertheless, as other sports, such as field hockey and rugby, were already incorporated, the Club continued its activities and it was then that it dropped the name "Federation" thus becoming "HURLING CLUB" as its known today. | |||||||
| In May 25th, 1948 new grounds and premisses were inaugurated at Hurlingham, Buenos Aires province, 20 km. NW from the Federal District (Buenos Aires city) where today the Club is in full expansion and has a very active sports life. There are also tennis courts, bowls fields and a swimming pool. Social life is very active where the young have parties and dancing nearly every Saturday night, ladies play card games, small children have their play ground, etc. Many times concerts and conferences are held which adds to the culture of the Club. | |||||||
